Icha foundation was a dream that I, Madhu Tugnait, nurtured for 20 years. The face of Icha kept on changing and growing from time-to-time during these 20 years, from an old-aged home to a destitute women’s home to a home for orphans (spastics, handicapped and normal children), finally I decided that I would shelter all categories.
I was leading an absolute commercial life with all its stress and fast life as a fashion designer and successfully ran a boutique in Vizag. The dream of being able to do something for society kept growing stronger within me as the years passed by and finally gave in to the service of humanity in December 2005. I gave up my business and donated it to the workers who stood by me for all the years of my commercial life and moved on to volunteer service in an NGO managing their production centre, dealing with kadhi and handloom weavers and various artisans of Andhra. I staged couple of exhibitions in Hyderabad, Vizag and Chennai and also trained handicapped children and women in tailoring and embroidery. The dream to do more for orphans was still growing stronger in my being but I couldn’t accomplish it since I didn’t have enough funding to buy land or build on it at the time. I kept praying hard for solutions and in 2010 I sold my precious belongings and bought an acre of land. Now, the question was how to get funds to build. I found a solution by selling my flat in Pune and now finally the building project is on its final stage of completion. I have built 5 cottages, each cottage contains 2 bedrooms and a living area, and each unit will house 7 orphans with 2 mothers (tektites, single mothers or widows). There is a common kitchen and mess for the inmates of Icha. I have already started my work with orphans in my own personal home in Vizag as the project will take another 2-3 months to complete. Today, I have a 2 year old boy named Sai who is a spastic, a 9 month old baby girl named Alaknanda who is also spastic and blind, a 4 year old boy, Mahesh, who is mute, a 5 year old boy, Neeraj, who suffers from a major eyesight problem as well as a body coordination problem, his mother, Subhalakshmi who I’m training to mother another 4 children.
